The best two things that a person can lose in life are fair-weather friends and some weight. As you lose some weight, you shouldn’t forget to also watch your pet’s weight. Yes because they also become obese. Research shows that excessive body fat in pets increases the risk of preventable health issues and may shorten the life expectancy of dogs and cats.

In the African context, these cases are rare but they do happen. Most dogs are left to fend for themselves in the garbage pits, but for those who are given maximum care and protection, they may turn obese if the care givers are not careful

However, there are some precautions that you can take in order to prevent them from becoming obese;

  • Avoid feeding your pet table scraps.
  • Keep a consistent diet by monitoring the amount of food you give your pet.
  • Regulate the amount of treats you give your pet and choose small treats, even for large dogs.
  • Establish a healthy and fun exercise schedule.
