EMBRACING ANIMAL WELFARE IN AFRICA

Animal welfare was once considered as a thing of the west in Africa but it is important to note that Africans have started to embrace animal welfare, and perceiving it as a priority issue.

This is evident in the activities currently being carried out by animal welfare organisations such as World Animal Protection.

As part of the October farming push that the organisation holds annually, we had petitions that we mobilised people to sign both online and offline, so to end animal cruelty, at Kenya National Theatre and Jamuhuri show grounds.

We had three days of a photo exhibition at Kenya National Theatre, Cheche gallery. The general public would walk in, have a look at the disheartening photos of animal cruelty that ranged from poor slaughter practices, poor transport and confinement and this made them easy to convince to sign our petition.

The most remarkable moment was the sensory experience whereby people could smell some stickers that we provided, that contained the smell of factory farms, show facial agitations and immediately sign up to our petition to end animal cruelty.

Personally, I have developed passion and zeal to love and care for animals, since i learnt about this organisation. So when I learnt about the open call to volunteer with World Animal Protection, I was very compelled to apply and luckily, I managed to get this chance.

It is our only hope that people will continue to embrace animal welfare and make the world a better place for the animals.
