With the rising number of COVID 19 cases, virtual working is set to continue to unforeseeable future. We are spending a lot of time communicating virtually where only our faces show up. Question is how do you show up and make an impact during a zoom call? Here are the top three tips.
Dress Up – Since the pandemic, people have become too sloppy, about how they dress and show up in Zoom meetings. Yes, Mark Zuckerberg can get away with a hoodie, BUT most of us cannot be forgiven. Wear smart casual for meetings with office colleagues – must be well ironed. If you are working in sales and marketing, a well pressed shirt is most ideal for a meeting with a client. Dress up and show up how you want people to perceive you. You don’t feel like dressing up? Well just make sure you are well dressed head to waist.
Angel your face properly – Once dressed up, think about how you show up. Your face should take up half the screen. Don’t sit too far away. People read a lot on your face and if they can’t see your face because you’re too far away or you’re sitting in the dark, that actually makes you look more suspicious and less powerful. So it’s not only how you dress and how you look, how you frame yourself also matters.
Tailor your Message- All dressed up and well lit? Its now time to catch the attention of your seniors and bosses in a Zoom call. Raise your hand, and when given the chance, speak up, be concise and yes begin with flattery. Research suggests that there is no amount of flattery, that it’s too much. So you want to tell your seniors how much you admire what they’ve done and how much you respect their abilities. Tell them how happy you are to be in their presence. Then lead with the most powerful part of your message, and the part that you want them to pay attention to. Remember, people have always had short attention spans and the attention span have further dipped with online working. Be direct, audible, concise and FLATTER.
Try these three tips. You might just earn yourself the corner office when physical working resumes.
