Many a times a discussion on building good vet – client relationships will always pop up but there is not a really good definition of a ‘good’ relationship.

Veterinarians may sometimes find themselves in difficult situations of not knowing how to handle clients who go to extremes , therefore their relationship with the client somehow weakens.

Really, what is a good vet – client relationship and what really defines it?

  • There is a good vet – client relationship if a veterinarian is readily available for a follow up or evaluation, arranges for veterinary emergency, continuing care and treatment.
  • When patient records are maintained, this builds a good client – vet relationship.
  • If a vet provides an oversight of treatment, compliance and outcome, then a good vet – client relationship exists.
  • Sufficient knowledge of the patient by the vet also defines a good relationship with the client.
  • If a client agrees to follow the vet’s instructions, then a good relationship with the vet is developed.
  • Whenever a vet assumes responsibility for making clinical judgements regarding the patient’s health, a good client – vet relationship is on the build up.
