Livingstone, Zambia, World Animal Protection condemns the planned dog culling by the Livingstone City Council.  We urge council authorities to find better means to manage the increasing dog population in Livingstone town.

“Culling dogs is a cruel, needless and ineffective attempt to control rabies and manage stray dog populations. Livingstone City Council need to abandon their planned cull and seek expert advice on alternative options.” Says Dr. Emily Mudoga, Campaigns Manager, Animals in Communities at the World Animal Protection.

“We know that mass dog vaccinations, neutering and educating communities on responsible dog ownership are proven to be both effective and humane.

“Dogs are our soldiers and ally in the fight against rabies. World Animal Protection is campaigning to end rabies globally and has provided over 1.6 million vaccinations to protect dogs and their communities from rabies. We work with governments and global institutions such as the UN to encourage responsible dog ownership and raise awareness of dog bite prevention. We have shown time and time again that dogs and people can live safely together without resorting to cruel culling.” She concludes.
