WHY FARMERS SHOULD VENTURE INTO DAIRY GOAT FARMING

Small ruminants are mainly kept by women and youth and a means of livelihood to many in poor resource areas.

Dairy Goat farming is not very common in Kenya, as compared to dairy cow farming. Most farmers have the fear of venturing into dairy goat farming, for doubts that it may not bring in as much profit as dairy cows would do.

One dairy goat that is very much common in Kenya is TOGGS, that is originally from Switzerland, in the Toggenburg valley of St. Fallen.

It is already doing very well in Kenya, with a company such as Kibidav limited in Kiambu, having 84 TOGGS.

The company boasts to be the only one that processes goat milk in Kenya, and supplying it to different stores.

Why goat milk?

  • Goat milk is a treatment for ulcers
  • It is also easily digestible, lowering the chances of constipation
  • Goat milk also has a high nutritional potential
  • Goats are also easy to feed, as compared to cows. They have a lower feeding capacity
  • Goat milk is also suitable for lactose intolerant persons, since it has less lactose, and less allergenic proteins.
